Valverde In Peak Form For Tour After Spanish National Championship Win

Alejandro Valverde confirmed his status as one of the favourites to take the GC title at the 2008 Tour de France with a barnstorming win in the Spanish National Championship road race overnight. Valverde was able to outsprint Oscar Sevilla after being perfectly set up by his Caisse d'Epargne team over the 200km course. Caisse d'Epargne teammate and 2006 Tour winner Oscar Pereiro filled the podium, finishing third from a group of riders a minute back from the leading pair.

Valverde will now have the honour of wearing his country's national jersey at this years tour, and will be looking to improve on his slightly dissapointing 6th at last years event when he entered as favourite for the title. His national championship success, combined with his recent win in the Dauphine Libere, suggest he will be hard to beat again come the finish in Paris.
